What needed solving
Inspecting surface defects on hot steel strips at 600–900°C in the Compact Strip Mill was extremely challenging for traditional inspection methods.
The high-temperature environment and high strip speed made manual visual inspection impractical, leading to surface defects being detected only downstream after significant processing cost had been added.
How Qualitas solved it
An AI and machine vision system was deployed inline in the Compact Strip Mill to detect and classify surface defects on hot-rolled steel strips continuously at production speed.
Deep-learning defect classification identified and categorized surface anomalies in real time, logging defect maps per coil for downstream routing decisions and quality reporting.
